12 Top Tips for Home Security

  1. Make sure your CCTV is recording, you don’t want to miss the incident if something happens! Did you know that 90% of burglars will avoid homes with CCTV?

  1. Don’t let your subscriptions pile up. If you subscribe to a newspaper or magazine, pause delivery or make sure someone collects it for you, if they start to piling up on your doormat it’s a sign to burglars that no one is home.

  1. Leave a light on or the radio so it looks like someone is in. If you’re going away for a while put some lights on timers so they come on in the evening. And invest in some external floodlights that are motion activated.

  1. Leave your curtains open, closed curtains during the day is a sign to burglars that no one it at home. Or ask a neighbour or family member to pop round and open and close your curtains for you.

  1. Always set your burglar alarm, 70% of people who have a burglar alarm don’t bother to set it! Yet 60% of burglaries at homes with a set burglar alarm are unsuccessful.

  1. Don’t leave spare keys lying around, under door mats and plant pots! Burglars know where to look and will let themselves in!

  1. Let your neighbours know when you are away, they can keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour that they’d probably ignore if they thought you were at home.

  1. Put valuables away or in a safe, if burglars can see valuable items lying around your house they are more likely to break in.

  1. Don’t broadcast the fact that you are going away! You never know who is listening. 78% of burglars admit to using social media to find out who’s on holiday.

  1. A burglar will generally spend as little time as possible in your house, usually 8-12mins. So put valuable in places they probably won’t look, such as the kitchen or a nursery.

  1. Don’t forget about your shed! Outdoor thefts are 20% higher than 5 years ago and burglars like expensive bikes and tools. Make sure you use heavy duty padlocks on your shed and gates.

  1. Unbelievably over half of burglars use the front door to break in! So make sure yours is sound and secure. Replacing an old door with an accredited “Secured by Design” door is good way to prevent a break in.
